Kansas City Criminal Defense Law Office

Kansas City Criminal Defense Law Office

Facing a federal investigation or federal criminal charge changes the calculus of a case in ways many people do not expect until they are already in the middle of one. At Sandage Law LLC, our Kansas City office handles federal criminal matters, including white collar investigations, alongside the state-level cases that bring clients through our door. Not every investigation leads to a criminal charge, and how a case is handled in its earliest stages often affects whether it ever gets that far.

Why Clients Choose Sandage Law LLC

Why Clients Choose Sandage Law LLC

Our attorneys bring more than 60 years of combined experience to federal and state criminal matters, with a particular depth in white collar defense. That background matters when a case involves financial records, regulatory agencies, or a grand jury investigation that has not yet resulted in charges. Beyond experience, clients consistently point to two things when they describe working with our firm:

  • A genuine personal connection, rather than feeling like one file among hundreds
  • Direct, consistent communication throughout the life of a case, not just at major milestones

We are outcome-driven in how we approach every case, whether that means pursuing negotiations with federal prosecutors, positioning a case for the strongest possible defense at trial, or working to keep an investigation from becoming a formal charge in the first place.

Types of Cases We Handle

Our Kansas City office represents clients in a range of federal and state criminal matters, including:

  • White collar investigations and charges, including fraud, embezzlement, and financial crimes
  • Federal grand jury investigations that have not yet resulted in formal charges
  • Drug trafficking and distribution charges at both the state and federal levels
  • Public corruption and regulatory investigations
  • State-level felony and misdemeanor charges throughout Jackson and Johnson Counties

The Federal Courts Serving Kansas City

Kansas City’s position on the Missouri-Kansas state line means federal criminal matters in this area can fall under one of two federal districts, depending on where the underlying conduct occurred, where a defendant resides, or where an investigation originates. The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri hears federal cases out of the Charles Evans Whittaker United States Courthouse in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.

Just across the state line, the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas hears federal matters out of the Robert J. Dole United States Courthouse in Kansas City, Kansas. Our attorneys appear regularly in both, along with the U.S. Attorney’s Offices that prosecute cases in each district.

State Courts We Appear In

Alongside federal matters, our Kansas City office represents clients in state-level criminal cases throughout the metro, including:

Because state and federal cases proceed under different rules, timelines, and sentencing structures, our attorneys evaluate early in every case which court and jurisdiction a matter is likely to fall under, and adjust strategy accordingly.

What to Expect When You Work With Our Team

Federal cases in particular move differently than state cases, often unfolding over months of investigation before a client is ever formally charged. Here is what clients can expect when they work with Sandage Law LLC:

  • A clear explanation of where your case stands and what comes next
  • Direct communication with our attorneys, not routed through staff who cannot speak to case strategy
  • An outcome-driven approach, whether that means pursuing negotiations, contesting evidence, or preparing for trial
  • Attorneys who understand both the Western District of Missouri and the District of Kansas, along with the state courts throughout the metro

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Court Will My Case Be Heard In If I’m Arrested In Kansas City?

It depends on where the alleged conduct occurred and whether federal law is involved. If your case stays at the state level, it will typically be heard in Jackson County Circuit Court on the Missouri side or Johnson County District Court on the Kansas side, depending on where you were arrested. If federal charges are involved, your case will be heard in either the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri or the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas. Our attorneys evaluate this early in every case so we can build a strategy around the correct court from the start.

Does It Matter Whether My Case Is Charged In Missouri or Kansas?

Yes. Missouri and Kansas have their own criminal codes, sentencing structures, and court procedures, so the state where you are charged can significantly affect your options and outcome. A charge that carries one set of penalties in Missouri may be classified and sentenced differently in Kansas for the same underlying conduct. We regularly appear in courts on both sides of the state line, so we can walk you through what to expect based on where your case is filed.

Can My Case Move Between State and Federal Court?

In some situations, yes. A case that begins as a state matter can be adopted by federal prosecutors if it involves conduct that crosses state lines, federal property, or other federal interests, and the reverse can happen as well. This shift changes the rules, the potential penalties, and the timeline you are working with, which is why we monitor for this possibility from the moment we take on a case.
